Question mark over pre-Budget Report

It is thought that the government may look at removing, if only temporarily, the autumn pre-Budget Report.

The pre-Budget Report was introduced by Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor.

Press reports have suggested that a decision on whether to stage a pre-Budget Report this year has not yet been taken.

However, the emergency Budget and the planned comprehensive spending review, which will be published in October, could mean that the Chancellor may consider dropping the PBR for this year at least.

Even if the PBR is not removed from the economic calendar of announcements altogether, there is a chance that it may be renamed and refashioned.
